Downton Abbey Themed Weddings

Despite coming out in 2010, ten years ago, Downton Abbey has shown no signs of slowing down. With six series, numerous one-off specials and a film, its detailed look at the lives of the aristocracy and their servants has found a place in the hearts of viewers all round the world and provides a different sort of viewing from things like Game of Thrones. Stylish and chic, it’s the perfect wedding theme for those wanting some vintage glamour for their big day.

Fashion

1920’s fashion was forward thinking and chic. It seems odd to call it vintage now because it was so ahead of the curve.

Lace was a big feature for 1920’s dresses for a soft romantic look.

So were clean lines, so stay away from the big princess style dresses and opt for something that flows. Possibly even with an inbuilt train.

There are no restrictions for sleeves. Long, short or shoulder caps, were all in fashion for the 20’s.

Head pieces were important design features with veils and tiaras being used together and hair styles are clean and simply tied back from the face, rather than elaborate curls. Stylish and elegant without being fussy.

Simple Flowers

Flowers were less of a thing in the 1920s than they are now. Rather than big handtied or cascading bouquets, the Downton brides opted for smaller posey’s or nosegays. Of course, that’s only if you’re having a purist 1920s wedding.

Details

Details count in themed weddings, so make sure your champagne glasses are right. Instead of flutes, you want wide, shallow glasses, like in The Great Gatsby. And for that extra authentic step, serve your guests the Bee’s Knees.

Mix 2 oz of gin, 0.75 oz of lemon juice, and .75 oz of honey simple syrup, strain and serve with a garnish with a lemon twist.

Location

And of course, your location plays a big part in creating the ideal atmosphere. Capesthorne Hall is a Jacobean-style stately home set in 100 acres of parkland. A little oasis of history in our ultra-modern world, Capesthorne Hall is the perfect wedding venue in Cheshire for your Downton Abbey wedding.
