Vegan Make-Up

The other day I was getting my nails done and the technician told me that my gel nails were suitable for vegans. She said she was getting more and more requests for it from clients who want to live more ethically.

If I’m honest, it wasn’t a question I’d thought to ask, I just wanted beautiful nails, but it did make me wonder about how to make sure your have vegan make-up for your wedding.

If you’re having a beautician, then this is easy, you ask them. They should know whether their products are appropriate for vegans. Have this conversation when you’re booking your consultation so they can source the products you want if they don’t have them in stock. By being up front, you’ll save both yourself and the beautician time.

If you’re doing it yourself, then you need to check the ingredients. Just because something says its vegan friendly doesn’t always mean it is. Products that use beeswax are technically not vegan because they use animal by-products.

A great resource is the PETA website (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). They have a list of animal derived ingredients that you can find in cosmetics so you know what to look for.

If you’re struggling to work through all the different brands and jargon to work out whether they are vegan and cruelty free, as I was when I was researching this, then PETA have put together a list of vegan, cruelty-free products for you. They have everything from mascara and eyeliner to concealer and lipstick.

While researching I was quite proud to see that some of them were from companies I already use, like Lush who are already my go-to for plastic free products. Some of the others were INIKA, Too Faced, Beauty Without Cruelty, and The Body Shop.

And don’t forget your brushes. Make sure that they only use synthetic fibres rather than animal fur to make sure you have a truly eco-beauty experience. It’s never been easier for you to be more mindful of your product choices and impact on the environment and still look fabulous.
